Abstract

Spectral analysis of wavelets extracted from seismic data has been utilized in characterizing the reservoir beyond the usual seismic bandwidth. Wavelets were extracted from the seismic and transformed using fast Fourier Transform (FFT) into the spectral domain and parameterized in terms of peak frequency, 75th percentile and 85th percentile frequencies. These parameters were used to produce equivalent maps respectively. The wavelet maps provided a gross outlook of the varying degree of heterogeneity and/or of the saturating fluid in existing hydrocarbon reservoir as well as new hydrocarbon prospect (delineation of a channel) for optimal location of new wells. Thus, visualizing seismic data at discrete frequencies revealed anomalous or diagnostic behavior not readily apparent on the broad-band seismic data.
