Abstract
Long term SP observation at ground surface can be applied for subsurface fluid flow monitoring, such as groundwater or geothermal fluid flow, assuming that SP anomaly is caused by streaming potential. However, the interpretation of SP monitoring data is generally quite difficult because of noises from various sources and it is quite difficult to separate each noise in time series. However, in more practical manner, there are simple devises to see the signals more clearly; it may achieved by proper selection of monitoring points and simple averaging processes, with knowledge about possible noise sources and the characteristics of SP signal caused by subsurface fluid flow. In this paper, recommended devises for the whole processes of data acquisition, processing, and interpretation for SP monitoring is introduced with detailed explanation of characteristic of each noise source.
